Intensive English Language Program

The Intensive English Language Program (IELP) at Cleveland State University can help you improve your English skills for educational, business or personal goals. By living “in the language,” you will learn English more efficiently.

The IELP has:

  • Four levels (Elementary, Low Intermediate, High Intermediate and Advanced)
  • Five courses in each level (Reading, Writing, Grammar, Listening & Speaking, and Vocabulary) with 23 hours of instruction per week.

Cleveland State University accepts completion of the Advanced level for its English language proficiency admission requirement.

Students come first!

We work hard to meet your needs:

  • Classes are offered in two 15-week semesters and a 12-week Summer session.
  • Sessions begin in January, May, and August.
  • Special Programs available May – August.
  • Four levels of instruction (Elementary through Advanced).
  • Smaller classes will give students more individual attention.
  • Students at the IELP will have a university ID for student services and can use the library, gym, and computer labs on the Cleveland State University campus.
  • Our experienced and qualified instructors have advanced degrees in ESL or related fields.
  • Students receive academic advising
  • Students can go on monthly planned trips and activities.
  • Students may participate in the Conversation Partner Program.
  • Students can join student clubs and participate in university activities.
  • We can also design special programs for groups during the regular semesters or the summer.

On-Campus Housing

Fenn Tower, Euclid Commons and Heritage Suites are the three on-campus residence halls.

  • Students must apply for on-campus housing at www.csuohio.edu/reslife and pay deposit before arriving to reserve a space.
  • Two students generally share a room, but some single rooms are available at extra cost. Some suites have private bedrooms with shared common space.
  • Students living on campus must purchase meal plans for on-campus dining. Students may purchase the smallest plan if their suite has a kitchen.
  • Currently, there is no housing for married students. If you are married, you will have to arrange off-campus housing.
  • Students should arrive two weeks before classes to make arrangements for off-campus housing.
  • Off-campus housing information is available at the Student Life office and at CISP.

Please let us know what your plans are for housing on your application. We recommend that students use on-campus housing for the first semester. Fall contracts are for 2 semesters. Students must arrange on-campus housing ahead of time. www.csuohio.edu/reslife
