The University of Alabama (UA), founded in 1831, is the flagship public university for the state of Alabama, which is located in heart of the southeastern United States. The large, beautiful UA campus is located in the city of Tuscaloosa in west-central Alabama, and is part of the University of Alabama System. UA enrolls more than 38,000 students, including approximately 1500 international students from 75+ countries around the world. Ranked one of the best public institutions in the USA, UA offers a wide variety of top-quality academic programs and over 200-degree programs. For non-native English speakers who meet the academic qualifications for admission but who do not meet the English-language requirement, UA offers the Pathway to UA and Conditional Admission for both undergraduate and graduate study. The UA English Language Institute (ELI) provides a six-level Intensive English Program for students who need or want to improve their skills in English.
The city of Tuscaloosa has approximately 100,000 residents and is within driving distance of major US cities such as Atlanta, Birmingham, and New Orleans and the beaches along the Gulf of Mexico. Many multi-national corporations such as Airbus, Boeing, Google, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda-Toyota, and Mercedes-Benz are located in Alabama and contribute significantly to diversity and economic growth. Tuscaloosa’s climate, which is relatively warm most of the year, has four distinct seasons–long summers and short winters, with beautiful weather in the fall and spring. Recreational activities such as water and outdoor sports are very popular in Alabama, and the warm climate in Tuscaloosa allows for outdoor activities and recreation during most of the year.
UA and the UA English Language Institute both offer lots of activities for students, including academic lectures, athletic competitions, sporting events, and musical and theatrical concerts and productions. Special cultural and social activities are scheduled for ELI students on a weekly basis, and participation is optional. ELI student activities include local events and out-of-town trips to nearby cities and attractions. ELI students have access to all facilities and events on the large UA campus, including more than 500 student organizations. Participation in various activities, events, and clubs is a great way to meet and make new friends from the US and around the world.
